  • Is there a minimum age for Volunteering?
    Yes, our minimum age for Volunteering is 18 years of age.
  • What is the process for becoming a Volunteer?
    The process for becoming a Volunteer includes the following: Submitting an application An interview with a Volunteer Manager Review of references Completion of online training modules followed by brief in-person orientation Completion of a 2-step Tuberculosis skin test Completion of a background check
  • I don't have any experience in healthcare - can I still Volunteer?
    Yes! Via Volunteers do not perform any hands-on care for patients, so no healthcare experience is needed.
  • What would I do as a hospice Volunteer?
    Volunteering with VIA provides a multitude of opportunities! Volunteering can include the following: Providing companionship or respite to a caregiver. Examples may include reading a book, playing music, watching a movie, looking at old photos, discussing life experiences. Working at a hospice house visiting patients, greeting visitors, watering the flowers, or organizing snacks. Volunteering in the office filing and assisting with various administrative functions. Helping at a special event registering participants, obtaining auction items, serving refreshments, talking about hospice services. And much more!
  • Is there a minimum time commitment?
    As a non-profit, we are always in need of Volunteers and find that a minimum 1-year commitment and 24 hours of service per year helps us be able to plan and ensure that our patients, caregivers, and fundraising events have the support they need, when they need it.
  • Where would I Volunteer?
    Volunteering may take place in many locations, such as: One of our office locations Special events Private homes Long-term care facilities Hospice houses and more!
  • Do you provide training?
    Yes! Training is self-paced and virtual. We also have a brief, in-person, orientation that is held upon completion of virtual online training. In addition, ongoing continuing education is provided.
  • What services are available to Volunteers after the death of a patient?
    Self-care is very important in this type of Volunteer work. We encourage Volunteers to take time off as needed. Our grief counselors on staff are always available to work with Volunteers that may grieve the loss of a patient.
  • Are there specialized Volunteer opportunities available?
    Yes! We are always looking for certified cosmetologists, pet therapy volunteers, notaries, and massage therapists.
  • What precautions do you take for COVID when Volunteering?
    We require the following as a precaution to both patients and Volunteers for COVID: Mandatory COVID Vaccination or Exemption Masks must be worn when interacting directly with patients If you have any questions about COVID precautions, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.
